WHAT IS NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE:

Naturopathic Medicine is a holistic form of medical care that combines current medical research with historical herbal and nutritional wisdom. Naturopathic doctors are trained as primary care providers in many different areas including botanical medicine, nutrition, acupuncture, and lifestyle counseling among other modalities.   Naturopathic doctors strive to adhere closely to their six tenets:

The Healing Power of Nature

The goal of naturopathic medicine is to allow the body to do the healing and to help remove any obstacles that may be inhibiting the healing process. The body has an innate ability to heal itself and we focus our treatments around amplifying the body's ability to self-heal.

Identify and Treat the Cause

Naturopaths often describe themselves as "medical detectives" - we aren't concerned with individual symptoms, but rather how the individual symptoms piece together.  Our goal is determine the root cause of any disease and not to treat symptomatically or suppress the symptoms.

First Do No Harm

Simply stated, our effort will be to use the least invasive measure to acquire the greatest results.  Our practice is to avoid the harmful suppression of symptoms while at the same time using modalities with the least number of side effects.

Doctor as Teacher

Naturopathic doctors place significant importance upon teaching patients how to be responsible for their health.  It's important for our patients to understand how we approach treatment and to guide to become more empowered in controlling and optimizing their health.

Treat the Whole Person

Naturopathic doctors take into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental and social aspects of health among other factors when treating patients.

Prevention

The assessment of risk factors including environmental, genetic and dietary will be essential in the prevention of disease and are always included when visiting a naturopathic doctor.

opus23 genetic reading AT FLEX5 WELLNESS

flex5-wellness-holistic-spa-opus23-treatment-logo-uptown-charlotte-nc

WHAT IS opus23:

Opus23 is a software program developed by Dr. Peter D’Adamo that interprets raw genomic data from 23andme, a service company that performs genomic analysis and reports their findings back to you. After uploading the “raw data” into Opus23, the program then translates the raw genetic data into clinically relevant and important information that the can then be incorporated into preventive or therapeutic actions.

23andme reports over 700,000 individual genetic markers called SNPs (pronounced ‘snips’). SNP stands for ‘single nucleotide polymorphism.’ which simply indicates that at some point in the genome there was a variation in one of the letters of DNA (A,T,C,G) from what was normally to be expected. For example, a person might have a SNP with a ‘C’ at that location, whereas a ‘T’ would normally be expected. SNPs are very common, as each of us are uniquely different genetically from each other. Many SNPs have been associated with certain risks (such as diseases or susceptibilities).

Opus23 combs through the results and looks for these special SNPs. It then activates it own analytic machinery and reports back to the physician any areas of special interest. This type of testing would have cost tens of thousands of dollars as little as a few years ago; the fact that it’s available at such a reasonable cost is a testimony to the amazing developments in modern technology.

At the time of your appointment, your genetic data will be interpreted and ready to present in an easy to understand format.  The Opus appointment can be based upon current diagnoses or future concerns but can also provide insight into basic metabolism, detoxification, and hormonal regulation.  Your investment in Opus23 will continue to grow with time as the program can be re-worked to gain additional insight into new concerns at each visit. New functions are constantly being added to Opus23. With each new release of Opus23, Dr. Hurt will continue to run your data through each new version.

ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT AT FLEX5 WELLNESS

flex5-wellness-holistic-spa-acupuncture-treatment-dr-zach-hurt-uptown-charlotte-nc

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE:

Having been utilized in China for millennia, acupuncture is quickly becoming recognized as a mainstream alternative to conventional medicine in the United States.  Known for its efficacy, research shows that acupuncture treats many illnesses – from the common cold to chronic pain or fatigue.  Dr. Zachary Hurt provides an effective approach to acupuncture by bridging the gap between ancient Chinese theories and modern evidence-based research to provide exceptional patient-centered care.

WHAT DOES ACUPUNCTURE TREAT?

Acupuncture treats a WIDE variety of common illnesses/conditions – both acute and chronic.  Acupuncture is also great to help keep you “tuned up” and performing optimally.  Below is a list of commonly treated conditions:

  • Hyper/Hypotension
  • Leukopenia (low white blood cells)
  • Chemo/Radiation Palliative Care
  • Allergies/Allergic Rhinitis
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Depression/Anxiety
  • Infertility
  • PMS/Heavy Menses
  • Gastritis
  • Asthma/COPD
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Insomnia
  • Food/Drug/Alcohol Addiction
  • Nerve Damage/Paralysis
  • Regional Pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sciatica
  • Sports Related Injury
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Facial Pain/TMJ
  • Bell’s Palsy
  • Headache/Migraine
  • Induction of labor
  • Morning Sickness
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Postoperative Palliative Care
  •  Stroke Complications`

WILL ACUPUNCTURE HURT?

A common misconception with acupuncture is that it will be painful or uncomfortable.  This is absolutely NOT true.  The size of each needle is roughly the width of a single hair.  Around 40 acupuncture needles can fit into the tip of one hypodermic needle (a needle used to withdraw blood).  The only sensation you should typically feel is heaviness or achiness around the needle insertion site.  Typically patients report that acupuncture sessions are very relaxing – sometimes to the point where a patient will fall asleep during the treatment.  Our goal is to ease your pain, so if at any time a needle feels uncomfortable, the needle will be either repositioned or removed.

WHAT SHOULD BE EXPECTED?

Your first acupuncture session will last around 1 hour and will consist of a brief intake discussing your chief concerns and medical history, a Chinese pulse and tongue examination, and the acupuncture treatment.  Each treatment after the initial visit will generally last about 30 minutes, as there will be a shorter intake and more treatment time.  A common question concerning acupuncture is how many treatments does it take before results are achieved.  While there is not one answer for every person, it generally takes more treatments the more chronic the condition.  Someone that has recently sprained his or her ankle will respond faster to treatment than someone with a 10-year history of rheumatoid arthritis.

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture (FRA)

flex5-wellness-holistic-spa-acupuncture-treatment-dr-zach-hurt-uptown-charlotte-nc

WHAT IS Facial Rejuvenation ACUPUNCTURE:

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture (FRA) is a style of acupuncture utilizing hair-thin facial needles to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, brighten faded skin, clear blemishes and blackheads, reduce puffiness and swelling, and tighten the skin of the face and neck.  FRA has been performed since the Sung Dynasty (~1000AD) and was often sought out by nobles and royalty of that time period. Research shows that FRA increases local circulation to assist in bringing vital nutrients to the skin while also helping remove cellular waste from the area.  FRA also increases local collagen production to help firm and tighten the skin, which causes a reduction in fine lines.   Although the treatment is centered on improving facial appearance, the patient is treated constitutionally by using points located in different areas of the body to help with stress and hormonal imbalance among many other concerns.

Generally, a course of treatment consists of twelve (12) weekly treatments; however, results may start to appear after the first treatment.  It is recommended to have regular maintenance treatments at six-month intervals, which could help prolong the results for up to five or ten years.  Each patient will also receive a set of rejuvenating skincare products by DeVita Rx to further enhance the FRA treatments. Lifestyle counseling, diet, and exercise may also be incorporated into the patient protocol.

Who benefits from facial rejuvenation acupuncture?

People of all ages and skin types can benefit from facial rejuvenation!  It is never too soon to start your anti-aging protocol.  Many people in their twenties and thirties will begin receiving facial rejuvenation to prevent discoloration from sun damage, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and to help balance hormones to reduce oil production and prevent breakouts.  Throughout the late forties and early fifties hormones begin to decline and the skin will often become less supple revealing deeper wrinkles and discoloration.  FRA can help not only help improve hormone production and function; it also helps bring blood flow to the skin to help remove discoloration and moisture.  Patients who are sixty and over can even see significant results from FRA – from softening deep wrinkles and bringing back a youthful glow to tightening the jaw line and sagging eye lids.

Will it hurt?

Unlike Botox, Restalin, and other fillers, FRA utilizes very fine needles to boost the production of collagen and increase blood flow to the surface of the skin.  The needles used in this procedure generally cause very little discomfort and immediately leave the skin feeling softer with a youthful glow.

Why choose facial rejuvenation acupuncture over other conventional cosmetic treatments?

Unlike most of the conventional cosmetic treatments, FRA carries very little risk of side effects or allergic reactions.  There is also NO downtime with FRA – some fillers and chemical peels leave the face swollen, red and bruised for weeks.  Drastic surgical procedures are very costly – upwards of $30,000 depending upon the severity and extent of the procedure.  While these other methods do improve appearance short-term, FRA is designed to create lasting results by stimulating your own collagen production, improving blood flow to the skin, and balancing hormonal changes that can lead to discoloration as well as fine lines and wrinkles.

Cupping (Myofascial Decompression) treatment

flex5-wellness-holistic-spa-acupuncture-cupping-myofascial-treatment-dr-zach-hurt-uptown-charlotte-nc

WHAT IS cupping?

Cupping, also known as myofascial decompression (MFD), has recently gained popularity among elite athletes for its ability to improve range of motion, increase flexibility and create a feeling of overall wellbeing.  Click here to learn more about cupping.

Having been utilized for thousands of years, cupping has recently regained popularity among many elite athletes including Michael Phelps as well A-list celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Jennifer Aniston, and Victoria Beckham.  However, you don’t have to be an Olympic gold medalist to benefit from a cupping treatment – many people suffering from low back pain, neck pain, or muscle spasms often find quick relief from just one or two treatments!

How does cupping work?

Historically, the Chinese used animal horns for this technique; however, today we use glass, plastic or bamboo cups to create suction over particularly tense or painful areas. Cupping promotes movement and circulation of blood to help reduce pain and relieve muscle tightness.  Cupping can also be used to improve asthma and gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea, stomachache and vomiting.  A technique called “slide cupping” where cups are moved across muscle groups may also be implemented to address larger areas of pain or tightness.

What should I expect?

If this is your first time experiencing cupping, there is no reason to be nervous or hesitant to pursue treatment.  Similar to a deep tissue massage, cupping helps to reduce local muscle tension, but generally involves less pain and discomfort.  You will often see bruises left by the cups – these are due to the suction from the cups and do not cause any residual pain.  Sign up for your cupping treatment today!

Who can benefit from cupping (myofascial decompression)?

Although elite athletes have popularized cupping, almost anyone can benefit from the effects of this ancient technique!  Cupping is very effective for increasing range of motion and flexibility and also significantly reducing pain levels.  Swimmers, runners and baseball/softball players can significantly improve performance from only one or two treatments.   Other chronic conditions such as frozen shoulder, low back pain, and restless leg syndrome are also successfully treated utilizing cupping.  This technique is not recommended for those with bleeding disorders, individuals who have been prescribed blood thinners, or women who are pregnant.

Smoking Cessation Protocol

flex5-wellness-holistic-spa-smoking-cessation-acupuncture-treatment-protocol-dr-zachary-hurt-uptown-charlotte-nc

Flex5 Wellness is proud to offer our new Smoking Cessation Protocol, which is a 10-week program consisting of ten weekly acupuncture treatments as well as supplemental and nutritional guidance.

THE THREE COMPONENTS OF THIS PROTOCOL:

Acupuncture, 10 weekly acupuncture sessions incorporating both auricular acupuncture and a constitutional treatment, which is discussed in further detail below.
Herbal Supplementation to help decrease cravings, support proper lung repair and enhance liver detoxification.
Dietary Modifications to help lessen cravings, reduce inflammation, and further promote detoxification.

HOW CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP WITH SMOKING CESSATION?

Acupuncture may help with smoking addiction in several different ways – reducing cravings, stopping jitters, decreasing stress and irritability, and promoting relaxation.  If you’ve heard the saying “there’s an acupuncture point for everything” then you won’t be surprised that there is actually a point located on the forearm called the “Stop Smoking Point” or “Tian Wei”. The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association has created a protocol for drug and alcohol dependency, which consists of five auricular acupuncture points.  Founded in 1974, NADA has trained over 20,000 healthcare professionals worldwide who have successfully treated hundreds of thousands of individuals suffering with addiction, PTSD, emotional trauma and behavioral disorders.  Along with the auricular points, each participant will receive a constitutional acupuncture treatment to address stress, insomnia, anxiety, and other concerns that may relate or contribute to smoking addiction.

WHY IS LIVER SUPPORT AND DETOXIFICATION IMPORTANT DURING SMOKING CESSATION?

Smoking impacts the liver in three important ways – toxin accumulation, immunological effects and increased risk of liver cancer.  Cigarettes contain over 4,000 chemicals – 43 of them are carcinogenic and over 400 are considered toxic. Among some of the more toxic ingredients are arsenic, cyanide, formaldehyde, and ammonia.  Most of these toxins must be processed and eliminated by the liver, which over time can lead to significant damage to the liver.   Smoking also increases pro-inflammatory proteins known as cytokines, which are created by the immune system.  Cytokines can wreak havoc on the liver (and other organs) causing damage and scarring to the liver if left unchecked.  Because of the damage caused by the cytokines and the buildup of toxins from the cigarettes, smokers are at a very high risk of liver cancer among many other types of cancer.

WHAT DOES MY DIET HAVE TO DO WITH SMOKING CESSATION?

This is a very common question, but your diet is incredibly important as you begin the smoking cessation protocol.  As people begin weaning off of cigarettes they begin to notice that foods will taste better and will often consume higher quantities of food.  Not only does smoking curb your appetite, it also decreases the activity of taste buds causing a decreased sense of taste.  After only a few days of limiting cigarette use the taste buds will begin functioning normally.   Those who don’t keep a close eye on their diets will often find that they start gaining unwanted weight when they quit smoking.  This is easily avoidable by adhering to some simple dietary modifications, which will help prevent the unwanted weight gain and also keep you satiated.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS THIS PROTOCOL?

Acupuncture and herbal supplementation have been proven incredibly effective for smoking cessation.  One study showed that utilizing only acupuncture reduced the number of cigarettes smoked daily in half after only the first treatment.

While acupuncture and herbal medicine are very effective, they cannot convince you to want to stop smoking – you must have the desire to quit smoking in order for this protocol to be utilized effectively.
